The Big Sea 04:51
With the dawn it came From out of the blue None of us knew What we should do Wave upon wave upon wave Coming ashore We’d never in all of our lives Seen its like before The big sea We climbed the track to watch From up on the hill A lucky escape for Cyrus and Ant They took to their heels While unfolding below us Was a terrible scene As the sea did its best To wipe the slate clean The big sea The forever sky where seabirds call And chase the rise and fall Out where breakers bay

Rain 09:04
Here the rain is falling now the sun is shining there As the wind is blowing so the air is still

Nowhere Fast 05:05
In light of it, a switch got clicked Into the dark, going nowhere fast Axe to grind, nothing to find Mark the days, that marked our minds Truth runs dry, why why Stay stay, stay away Thrown thrown, into the dark Now we’re going nowhere fast We’re going nowhere fast We’re going nowhere Blind blind, leading the blind Time time, looking behind Dig dig, digging a hole Stone piled, piled on bone Walk walk the same old track Pause for a while, take a step back Shine shine, shine a light And hope for all our sakes Hope - for all our sakes We’re going nowhere

about

The Bewilderness is a response to the strangeness of 2020, the sudden lockdown, and those moments of calm amongst the chaos.

Without work we had the time for a project that had been on our wishlist, which was to pair Janet Roddick with throat singer Jonny Marks. And what developed was a kind of song cycle for 2 voices and an altered string quartet of double bass, cello, violin and rhythm violin.

We are most grateful to Jonny and to Ruby Solly and Tristan Carter, 3 wonderful, generous musicians who agreed to join us for this experiment.
